GEMS Proudly Presents Artist - Neil Doherty

Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada Neil Doherty moved to Seattle in 2003 for a mechanical engineering design position. In an effort to keep a healthy balance between professional and private life, Neil has rekindled his enjoyment of creating artwork. A self taught artist, Neil enjoys taking photographs of a variety of subject matter in black and white.

Neil Doherty has become much more physical, more emotional. The painting is no longer an image or a series of images that define an emotion, but rather it is the expression itself of a particular event in Neil's life that has provided a painting’s inspiration. This is very much an emotion that is transferred from his soul to the canvas and represents what some would refer to as Modern Abstract Expressionism. It’s an expression of my emotions rather than simplifying the painting by merely showing images that could evoke an expression. The paintings displayed are part of the Prime Number Series and are explained in the following:

“In Mathematics, a prime number is a natural number which has exactly two distinct natural number divisors: 1 and itself....

This reflects and offers the conjecture of singularity and the creation which envelopes us as human beings. Because in Life, we are wholly responsible for ourselves and yet, which is most evident in all creatures, we are in need of a single divisor who is much like that of ourselves which we can compliment though still allow one another to remain constant. It is the value that provides two to become one and still remain themselves in the equation.”
